October 29, 2007 Log

1. We went over our topic sentences and our search words. We also learned about different periodicals, whether they are popular, trade/professional, or scholarly.
2. A popular periodical usually contains news about everything, like famous people. It also covers current events. These periodicals are meant for everyone to read mostly for enjoyment. They are rarely cited. A Trade/Professional is a periodical meant for a certain professional company or people. Some sources are credited but not many. A scholarly peiodical is meant for people researching a specific topic. These are always cited, usually with a big bibliography.
3. The Advantage of an electronic periodical is that you can usually find periodicals from a really long time ago. A disadvantage is that it is not original. An advantage of a print periodicals is that the information is usually current becuase sometimes the electronic copy doesn't come out for until afterwards. A disadvantage is that it is really hard to find old print periodicals.

In terms of your last point, if a periodical is indexed in a database, it's not hard to find that the information exists. If it's in JSTOR, it's not hard to find, either, because it's been digitized. The hard ones to find are the ones that haven't been digitized and indexed yet.
