c)To search for more periodicals, I need to put in more search terms and find a lot more information. This is very difficult, since most of the information just repeats itself.

October 29, 2007 Log

1. We went over our topic sentences and our search words. We also learned about different periodicals, whether they are popular, trade/professional, or scholarly.
2. A popular periodical usually contains news about everything, like famous people. It also covers current events. These periodicals are meant for everyone to read mostly for enjoyment. They are rarely cited. A Trade/Professional is a periodical meant for a certain professional company or people. Some sources are credited but not many. A scholarly peiodical is meant for people researching a specific topic. These are always cited, usually with a big bibliography.
3. The Advantage of an electronic periodical is that you can usually find periodicals from a really long time ago. A disadvantage is that it is not original. An advantage of a print periodicals is that the information is usually current becuase sometimes the electronic copy doesn't come out for until afterwards. A disadvantage is that it is really hard to find old print periodicals.

October 22, 2007 Log

1. Today in class we discussed different search engines in the A-Z database of the university's online library. We learned new programs like the CQ Researcher, Brittanica Online, and Lexis-Nexis.
2. Everything was very importatn to me because now I know that whenever I need to look something up, and I cannot find it somewhere, I have alternatives. It is also very useful to know all of this is online just incase the library is not accessable.
3. To ensure that I don't run into a dead end, I need to make sure I use very specific terms that I am sure will help me find the information that I need. I also need to make sure I don't use too many terms because that broadens my search.

October 18, 2007 Log

1. How did Huracane Katrina affect the U.S., whether it was geographically or politically?
2. I used the terms "huracane," "Katrina," and "political." I for the second set of terms I used "huracane," "Katrina," and "geopgraphy." They gave me a lot of results, so no, thee did not work.
3. I did try putting "political" OR "geography" in the same search, but it did not work; the search only gave me more results.
4. At the end, I endend up with only about 1,000 results. It was still quite a lot, but it was a better number than what it had given me before. I think a number around 300 is appropriate.
5. Only very few answered my question. I had to look in several different results to get a better understanding of my question.
6. Boolean operators help because they define the relationship between words. For example, AND means to use all terms given, OR mean only some, and NOT means not to give results with a certain word in it.

October 15, 2007 Log

1. We discussed how to use the school library as another source. We also talked about databases and Venn diagrams. We learned how to use the Academic Search Premier.
2. It was particularly important to me to find out how to use the Academic Search Premier because it is another way to find information, specially if you're looking for a historical news article.
3. I can use the techniques by using the Academic Search Premier to find information, instead of google, and I can also display information a different way by doing venn diagrams.
4. I think this a very good search strategy, but I do agree that it is much more useful for some things than others.
